Wert Angus Ranch has used AI for 12 years. Over that time, with the guidance of Accelerated Genetics ISR Dennis Comer, a synchronization strategy has been developed.
First, the cows are given pre-breeding shots 30 days ahead of breeding. The heifers are on the 14-day CIDR protocol. The same day that they put CIDRs in the heifers, the cows will run through and be given their pre-breeding shots. Two weeks later, they will pull the CIDRS on the heifers. Sixteen days later, they will give prostaglandin shots to the heifers.
The cows are on the 7-day CIDR protocol, so they will put CIDRS in the cows about 3 weeks after the heifers. This works well because then they can give Prostaglandin shots to the heifers and pull the CIDRS on the cows on the same day. Estrotect heat patches are put on all of the cows and heifers on the day of the Prostoglandin shots. The team will observe heats and try to breed off of estrus before running everything through on timed-AI on the third day.
Two days after the timed-AI breedings, a clean-up bull is turned-out. Fourteen days later, he will be pulled out and they will repatch all of the cows and heifers. From there, heats are checked and anything that comes into heat will be rebred. Finally the clean-up bull will be turned out again.
“We turn out a Hereford bull to tell which cows were bred by the bull,” Dennis explained. “With this program, Robert is able to use one clean-up bull on 240 cows.”
Robert noted that every animal has had its first breeding within a matter of 72-hours. He attributed the programs success to a team effort.
“On breeding day, we usually have two or three of our hired employees around. Madison (daughter) does the books, Bryce helps with the breeding, Riley helps bring them up,” Robert explained. “We try to keep everybody calm and nobody hurt.”
