Medication and Milk Replacer: What Should Be Used?

There are various types of medications that are placed in calf milk replacers (CMR). Because of this, there can be confusion as to which medication is best to use on a given operation. But first, there needs to be an understanding as to why medications are used in CMRs. The main purpose for medicated milk replacers is to reduce risk of scours. Scours, or diarrhea in calves, is a sign of something affecting the calf's digestive system and can be caused by a wide range  of issues.The different causes of scours can be broken into four basic categories: management, bacterial, viral and protozoal.

Management: The key to any good calf program is consistency. Any type of a dramatic change in the feeding program can cause a calf to scour. Varying the amount of milk replacer fed at each feeding, switching between different brands of CMR, and waste milk of varying degrees of quality can all cause a nutritional upset and lead to scouring.

Bacterial: Every digestive system is loaded with bacteria, many of which are beneficial to the health of the calf. There are also pathogenic bacteria that are present in all digestive tracts waiting for an opportunity to invade the body. When pathogenic bacteria have a chance to multiply beyond normal levels, the body has an immune response to the caused by the dying bacteria and causes it to release large amounts of water into the intestinal tract. This water is sent into the tract to help flush away unwanted bacteria and causes scours.

Viral: When a virus attacks a calf's digestive system it is actually penetrating live cell walls in order to multiply. When the virus finishes multiplying in the cell, the cell bursts open and releases new viruses to attack more cells. Once a virus successfully attacks and destroys cells, it also gives pathogenic bacteria an ideal location to invade and cause a secondary
infection which triggers an even bigger immune response (scours).

Protozoal: Protozoa that are common in calf operations include coccidia and cryptosporidia.
Protozoa are found in manure and soil and enter the calf through contaminated feed, water and the environment. Once it is in the intestine, the protozoa attach to the intestinal lining which decreases digestion, absorption and ultimately performance of the animal.

A key goal in a successful calf program is prevention of scours in the first place, and medicating the feed is only one way to reduce the number and severity of scour cases. The first factor to consider when looking at adding medication is that a large percentage of scours will not be prevented by medication in feed. It is also important to remember that pathogens that cause scours are commonly found in all calf raising facilities. Keeping the calves' environment clean with routine sanitation is one of the most effective methods of keeping the calves healthy. Having a good colostrum program is also critical in helping the calf's immune system fight off any pathogens that they may be exposed to during the early stages of life.

Management level scours are mainly a feed program issue and can be prevented by correcting issues that are affecting consistency in a calf diet. Ideally, if there are long-term changes that are going to be made in the feeding program, it should be implemented with the newborn calves, and continue the current program on the current calves until they are weaned.

Viruses are immune to any type of antibiotic or medication that can be placed in a CMR. The best way to prevent a viral scour outbreak is to have a good dry cow and calf vaccination program. It is also important to keep sick calves isolated from other calves as much as possible to reduce the risk of spreading the infection from calf to calf.

So, what medication, if any, should be used depends on the operation and the issues that are challenging that operation at a given time. There are two types of medications, an antibiotic such as oxytetracyline/neomycin or a coccidia control agent such as decoquinate (deccox) or lasalocid (bovatec). Medications can and should be changed depending on the current situation. The key to deciding is to discover what type of scour issue is most commonly occurring. If scours are an issue, producers should consult their veterinarian to determine the cause, and design a corrective plan.

Animal Plasma and Serum Proteins in Calf Milk Replacers

Plasma and serum protein from bovine and porcine sources have proven to be valuable ingredients in dairy calf milk replacers and supplements. This is because plasma and serum proteins are one of the few protein sources that can partially replace milk protein in milk replacers without compromising growth performance. In addition, plasma and serum are rich sources of antibodies (immunoglobulins), a portion of which resist digestion and provide protection against bacteria or viruses that may cause scours. Several studies have been conducted to determine the role of spray-dried animal plasma in calf nutrition; calves fed milk replacers containing SDAP experienced lower death loss, fewer off-feed days, and required fewer scour treatments compared with calves fed an all-milk protein milk replacer.

There has been much confusion surrounding the use of ruminant-derived plasma and serum proteins in ruminant feeds and the risk of cattle contracting bovine spongiform encephalopathy
(BSE). However, research has established that bovine blood and blood products (i.e. plasma and serum) do not transmit BSE, which has led the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to rule that plasma and serum derived from ruminants and other mammals are safe to be fed to ruminants such as dairy calves. In fact, bovine plasma and serum are classified in the same category as milk proteins with regard to food and feed safety, which is logical considering that many milk components (fat, protein, lactose) are synthesized from compounds in the blood.
