Continuing the Tradition

I had the opportunity to visit Wert Angus Ranch near Aurora, Neb., in early March.  The family operation consists of 240 Angus cattle and 2,500 acres of white corn. After driving by their lot of Angus cow-calf pairs, I found Robert and Tamera Wert along with their 17-year-old son, Bryce, and 13-year-old daughter, Riley and Accelerated Genetics ISR Dennis Comer and his assistant Cheyanne Barnhill enjoying morning conversation and coffee cake in their shop.  After accepting a piece of the coffee cake from Tamara and listening to the conversations of the cattle and farm combined with the occasional joke and laughter, I followed the crew to the breeding barn.

Racer Sires Impressive Daughters

In our fast-paced industry, we can sometimes be skeptical of the latest trends. 014HO07296 Racer demonstrates that there is no need to fear when it comes to trusting high-genomic sires. Racer was one of the highest-available genomic sires when he was released and not much has changed since he has added milking daughters. With a proven Sire Calving Ease under 5% and an SCR of over +2, he is very appealing on paper. But from what I’ve seen, his daughters are even better than expected!

The Cows Behind Stanton Bros Sires

With numerous sires topping the Accelerated Genetics line-up, Stanton Bros. Ltd., of Ilderton, ON, Canada are clearly doing something right. Jim Stanton, the partner who oversees the genetics portion of the 850-cow operation attributes this success to two things: a willingness to believe in genomics and investing in key cow families. Behind each of these impressive commercial sires is a deep and decorated maternal line with well-known and extraordinary brood cows from the past and into the present. On a recent visit to the Accelerated Genetics Production Facility in Westby, Wis., we had the opportunity to visit with Jim about some of the premier cow families of the Stanton genetics program.

Longevity Defines Profitability at Nosbush Dairy

When asked what is the ideal cow for his 750-Cow Registered Holstein herd is, Brad Nosbush states “A cow that I don’t know.” Through years of breeding for health traits, Nosbush strives to breed cattle that go unnoticed in his herd, but for all of the right reasons.
